AI – An inconvenient truth?

With Trevor Slater, Executive Chair, EngAige

For small consulting businesses, not using AI is quickly becoming a competitive disadvantage. The ability to access specialist capability on demand, respond to short-term workload spikes and deliver high-quality work under ever tighter timeframes is simply too valuable to ignore. But there is an uncomfortable truth: the very ease with which AI can be adopted is also its greatest risk.

“Are you kidding me? That’s just awesome!” That’s probably the reaction most of us have the first time we use AI. And, as they say, first impressions count. It isn’t long before we’re enthusiastic adopters, discovering all the remarkable ways AI can save time, improve productivity and simplify everyday tasks. Draft a letter. Improve a report. Summarise a document. Plan a holiday. The possibilities seem endless.

It doesn’t hurt that our ego gets the occasional top-up along the way with “That’s an excellent question” and “I really like the direction you’re taking.”  Let’s be honest, we all like hearing that, in a ‘wish my boss said that’ kind of way.

Before long, this amazing discovery gets brought to work. It seems a reliable assistant to draft correspondence, edit reports and generate content. Not only this, but AI becomes the topic of conversation around the office.

“Just get AI to do it.”

“Really?”

“Yeah… (and only too willing to show your new found skills) let me show you.”

Almost without noticing, what started as a personal productivity tool becomes part of everyday business practice.

Then one day you’re sitting back, latte in hand (because AI has finally given you time to drink it), reading a report you’ve just generated on a subject you know inside out. You stop. You read the paragraph again.

“What the hell is this? Where did this come from?”

It looks convincing, it sounds authoritative, and its complete nonsense.

You query it, and the response is: “Oh yes, you are quite right to call me out on this.”

Shattered.

And that’s where the message of this piece really begins.

Ready to Transform Your Environmental Decision Making and Approvals?

The problem isn’t that AI occasionally gets things wrong. The problem is that it often gets things almost right. A response that’s 95% correct is far more dangerous than one that’s obviously wrong because, unless you’re already an expert, you may never recognise the difference.

Ironically, AI delivers its greatest value when you’re not the expert. It helps us understand unfamiliar topics, navigate complex information and work more efficiently. But that’s also when we need the greatest confidence in the answers it provides.

That confidence shouldn’t come from the AI itself.

Real confidence in AI comes from the environment in which it operates:

  • It should come from the environment in which the AI operates.
  • It comes from guard rails.
  • It comes from trusted, current and organisation-approved data.
  • It comes from knowing exactly where every answer came from.
  • It comes from transparency, visibility, auditability and governance.
  • It comes from AI following your organisation’s processes, business rules and regulatory obligations—not simply predicting the next most likely word.

That’s the difference between consumer AI and enterprise AI. AI doesn’t become trustworthy because it’s intelligent. It becomes trustworthy because it’s governed.

That simple principle became the foundation for EngAige. We didn’t build EngAige to replace professional judgement.  We built it to strengthen professional judgement.

  • Every response is grounded in trusted organisational knowledge.
  • Every answer is traceable to its source.
  • Every interaction operates within established governance and business processes.

Because in high-consequence environments, productivity alone isn’t enough.

Confidence comes from knowing not only what the answer is, but why it is the answer.

The solution is easier and more cost effective than you may think.

If your organisation relies on AI to support environmental approvals, impact assessments or regulatory compliance, the question is no longer whether to use AI.

The question is whether your AI operates within a framework you can trust.

That’s why we built EngAige.
